Se

  • if, whether

    Vi dispiace se mi siedo qui? (Do you mind if I sit here?)
    Se fossi libero, accetterei il suo invito. (If I were free, I would accept his invitation.)

  • (the pronoun "si" becomes "se" when followed by a third-person direct object clitic: lo, la, li, le, or ne)

    Guardatelo. Non se lo merita. (Look at him. He doesn't deserve that.)
    Io non voglio che loro se ne vadano. (I don't want them to leave.)

Si

  • oneself, himself, herself, itself, themselves (reflexive pronoun)

    Lui si è vestito ed è uscito. (He got dressed and went outside.)
    È ammirabile come si controlla. (He controls himself admirably.)

  • (used to convey the meaning of the passive voice)

    Non è solo l'inglese che si parla qui, ma anche il russo. (Not only English is spoken here, but also Russian.)
    Oramai, il maggior numero di libri si vende su Internet. (Nowadays, most books are sold on the Internet.)

  • one, you, we, they, people (indefinite pronoun)

    Si dovrebbero leggere molti libri quando si è giovani. (One should read many books when one is young.)
    Bisogna fare attenzione a qualsiasi cosa si faccia. (One must take care in whatever one does.)
