<div class="conjugation_explanation_title">Why are these verb forms affected?</div>
<p>When a weak vowel (<span style="font-style: italic;">i</span> or <span style="font-style: italic;">u</span>) combines with a strong vowel (<span style="font-style: italic;">a</span>, <span style="font-style: italic;">e</span> or <span style="font-style: italic;">o</span>), they form a diphthong (=double vowel). Diphthongs count as a single syllable. This is important when trying to figure out which syllable is stressed:</p>
<ul>
<li>If the word ends in a <strong>vowel, <span style="font-style: italic;">-s</span> or <span style="font-style: italic;">-n</span></strong>, the stress is on the <strong>second to last syllable</strong>.</li>
<li>If the word ends in a <strong>consonant other than <span style="font-style: italic;">-s</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">-n</span></strong>, the stress is on the <strong>last syllable</strong>.</li>
</ul>
<p>In the verb forms where we have to put a stress mark on the <span style="font-style: italic;">u</span>, the stress would fall on the previous syllable otherwise. The spelling change moves the stress to the <span style="font-style: italic">u</span>. In the unaffected verb forms, the stress is either determined by another stress mark (e.g. <span style="font-style: italic">continuáis</span>) or the stress falls on the <span style="font-style: italic;">u</span> by default (e.g. <span style="font-style: italic">continuamos</span>).</p>
